Dominic's Journey

If somebody had told me when I arrived in the UK in 2005 that I would still be here twenty years later, running a business supplying letterboxes and parcel boxes across the country, I probably wouldn't have believed them. What was meant to be a short stay became a new home, a new life and eventually the start of a business that would grow far beyond anything I imagined.

Looking back, there have been challenges, mistakes, risks, lessons and plenty of hard work. There have also been incredible people, opportunities and experiences that helped shape both my life and Letterbox4you. This is the story of that journey.

Arrival in the UK
2005

A Few Months That Changed Everything

I arrived in the UK in 2005 planning to stay for a few months, improve my English and experience life in a different country. At the time, my English vocabulary was fairly limited. I could mainly say “Yes”, “No”, “Of Course” and “Thank You”. Everything else was usually accompanied by a smile and a hope that I had understood the question correctly.

What I lacked in English, I tried to make up for with hard work, determination and a willingness to learn. Even when I wasn't entirely sure what was being said, I knew I could always control the effort I put in. Like many plans in life, things did not quite work out as expected. Over time, the UK became home. I built a career, met amazing people, started a family and eventually discovered a passion for building something of my own.

Finding An Opportunity

During my years working in retail, I noticed a trend that didn't sit comfortably with me. The market was increasingly being flooded with cheaper imported products, often at the expense of higher-quality alternatives made in Europe. While price was clearly important, I also met plenty of customers who cared about quality, design and buying something that would last.

It made me realise there was an opportunity to build a business for people whose first question wasn't always “What's the cheapest option?” but rather “What's the best product for my needs?” That idea would eventually become Letterbox4you.

The Kitchen Table Years

Letterbox4you began in 2012 around a kitchen table in Buckinghamshire. At the time, I wasn't trying to build the biggest company in the industry. I simply believed customers deserved better products, better advice and better service than what was commonly available.

With a laptop, a small amount of stock and plenty of determination, the journey began. Like most small businesses, there were no grand offices, no large teams and no guarantees that it would succeed. Just a belief that if you looked after customers and offered quality products, good things would eventually follow.

Early hustle

Banana Boxes & Garden Sheds

As orders started to increase, the spare room slowly disappeared under piles of stock. Before long, operations moved into a garden shed, which became the company's first warehouse. Those early years required a fair amount of creativity.

Some of the first communal letterboxes were shipped in recycled banana boxes because they were the perfect size. It wasn't glamorous, but it worked. I also became a very familiar face at the local Post Office. Looking back, I suspect they were just as pleased as I was when we eventually moved to larger premises.

Quality over price

Choosing Quality Over Price

One of the most important decisions I made was not to compete by offering the cheapest products available. Instead, I focused on finding the highest-quality products I could and building relationships with specialist manufacturers across Europe.

It wasn't always the easiest route. There were cheaper alternatives available, but I believed customers deserved better. More than a decade later, that philosophy remains unchanged and continues to shape every decision we make as a business.

Taking the leap

Taking The Leap

Leaving employment in 2012 and committing fully to the business was one of the biggest decisions I have ever made. Like most new businesses, there were no guarantees of success and certainly no certainty about what the future would look like. Fortunately, my wife believed in the idea as much as I did.

Together we decided that we could make it work while I focused on building the business and gaining traction. Looking back, that support gave me the confidence to take a risk that ultimately changed the course of my life. Moving into a dedicated office and warehouse in Buckinghamshire felt like another huge milestone. What started around a kitchen table was slowly becoming something much bigger.

People on the journey
People

The Best Part Of The Journey

When people talk about building a business, they often focus on products, sales or growth. For me, the most rewarding part has always been the people. Over the years I have had the privilege of working alongside fantastic employees, manufacturers, suppliers, customers and friends who have all played a part in the Letterbox4you story.

Some were there for years. Some for a shorter chapter. Some joined when the business was little more than an idea, while others arrived as it continued to grow. Every one of them contributed something valuable. While my name may appear on the company records, Letterbox4you was never built by one person. Without the people who believed in the business, worked alongside me and supported the journey, none of what we have achieved would have been possible.

Looking Back With Gratitude

When I started Letterbox4you, success was far from guaranteed. Looking back today, I feel incredibly fortunate. Fortunate for the opportunities the UK gave me. Fortunate for the support of my wife and family. Fortunate for the people who worked alongside me. And fortunate for every customer who chose to place an order with a small business they had never heard of before.

Major projects
Growth

From Kitchen Table To Major Projects

What started around a kitchen table has grown into one of the UK's specialist suppliers of letterboxes and parcel boxes. Over the years, we have supplied more than 100,000 products and worked with homeowners, housing associations, property managers and some of the UK's largest construction companies.

Companies and organisations we have supplied include: Berkeley Group • CJ O'Shea Group • Hertfordshire Council • Ian Williams • John Sisk • Kier Construction • Rendall & Rittner • Sanctuary Housing • Southwark Council.

Looking back, it is sometimes difficult to believe how far the business has come from those early days of spare rooms, garden sheds and banana boxes.

The Journey Continues

While the business has changed enormously since 2012, the principles behind it remain the same. Quality products. Honest advice. Real people. I remain incredibly grateful to every customer who has trusted us with an order, every supplier who has supported our growth and every team member who has helped build Letterbox4you into what it is today.

If there is one thing I have learned over the last two decades, it is that quality, honesty and good people never go out of fashion. And while we have come a long way from kitchen tables, garden sheds and banana boxes, I still believe the best part of the journey is what comes next.
